Before you get disappointed at the lack of ridable creatures, it'south worth because what makes New World unique. It'southward not a particularly big world, not yet, and so naught is out of reach for players on foot. In fact, there's no surface area that you can't attain through normal progression. There'south basically no need for a mount yet.
Of course, things are probable to change. Amazon is betting large on New World, which means more content is almost sure to release in the time to come.
